Just an Observation

January 12, 2011

We’ve all been witnessing the recent firestorm surrounding Julian Assange and his site WikiLeaks. But what may not be known by most is that if Assange, an Australian citizen, is extradited to the US and tried for espionage, he could face the death penalty. After hearing this, i couldn’t help but be struck by the parallels between Assange, and Socrates. Both sought and valued truth above all else, regardless of the societal consequences, and both provided valuable criticism regarding how the democracies of their day operated. The only question I suppose, will be whether or not Assange ends up sharing Socrates’s fate. I hope that this time around, we can see through the platitudes and patriotic haze of our times and realize that the last time men acted hastily and rashly, we regretted the decision for two and a half millennia
